Choosing a new source of meat can bring up questions. We’ve put together answers to the most common ones we receive to make your decision easier.
How much freezer space do I need?
Freezer Space Requirements
A common question we receive is how much freezer space is needed for beefalo purchases. The amount can vary slightly depending on the specific cuts selected and packaging, but the following guidelines are a helpful estimate:
- Quarter share: approximately 5–8 cubic feet
- Half share: approximately 10–16 cubic feet
- Whole share: approximately 20–32 cubic feet
How much meat do you get from a Beefalo?
The amount of beefalo meat you receive depends on the animal’s size and how it is processed. On average, a beefalo has a live weight of approximately 900 to 1,300 pounds. After processing, the hanging weight is typically about 40–45% less than the live weight. This hanging weight is what is used to calculate the cost per pound, as well as processing fees. The exact amount of meat you receive will also vary based on the portion selected (quarter, half, or whole animal) and the specific cuts you choose during processing.
Does beefalo taste gamey?
Beefalo is not typically described as gamey. Its flavor is often compared to beef, with a clean, rich taste and a slightly leaner profile. Because it is a cross between cattle and bison, it may have a more robust flavor than standard beef, but most people find it mild and familiar rather than game-like.
Is your beefalo grass-fed or grain-finished?
Our beefalo are pasture-raised on managed grazing land and receive a natural forage-based diet. They spend their lives on pasture and are supported with locally sourced hay and carefully selected mineral supplements to promote health and consistent growth.
Is beefalo similar to buffalo meat?
Beefalo is closely related to buffalo (bison) meat since it is a hybrid of cattle and American bison. However, beefalo typically has a milder flavor and a more tender texture than pure bison, while still offering a leaner profile than traditional beef. It provides a middle ground between beef and buffalo in both taste and cooking characteristics.
How do I order beefalo meat?
Ordering our beefalo meat is simple. You can contact us directly to reserve a share for our next butcher date, choose your share size, and we will work with you on your get started with the cut selection process. We’ll walk you through each step so you feel confident in your choices from start to finish.
How does the cut sheet process work?
After your share is reserved, we guide you through the cut sheet process. This is where you select how you would like your beefalo processed—such as steak thickness, roast sizes, ground meat options, and specialty cuts. All meat is FDA inspected and vacuum packed according to your specifications. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to help you make recommendations based on common client preferences.
How long does it take to receive my order?
Processing times can vary depending on butcher availability and scheduling. Once your beefalo is sent for processing, it typically takes a few weeks before your order is ready for pickup. We will keep you updated throughout the entire process.
Where do I pick up my beefalo meat?
Once your order is ready, we bring it back to our ranch for convenient pickup. You can come directly to us to collect your beefalo, making the process simple and personal. Since we are an active working ranch with a private residence on-site, all visits—including pickup appointments—are scheduled in advance to help ensure safety for everyone. We'll communicate with you to arrange your visit.
Do you ship beefalo or is it pickup only?
At this time, beefalo is pickup only. After processing, we transport your order back to our ranch, where you can pick it up directly. This ensures your meat is handled carefully and stays properly chilled throughout the process.
